Magnesium disboride or magnesium boride are inorganic compounds. Magnesium boride molecular form is called MgB2. It’s a solid that is insoluble and dark gray. This compound is of interest because it is superconducting at 39 K(-234degC).In terms of composition, MgB2 is markedly different from most transition-metal-based cryogenic superconductors.

Magnesium dioxide has long been recognized by scientists, however no one has studied its superconductivity. It is the ability to conduct electricity without any resistance at temperatures below absolute zero. Jun Akimitsu from Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo made the announcement in January 2001 that his group had discovered that magnesium diboride could become superconducting at 39 Kelvin (-389 F), nearly twice as high as current intermetallic conductors. An announcement like this sent scientists all around the world racing to verify and reproduce the Japanese findings.

Magnesium boride converts into a Superconductor at temperatures close to 40K (-233°C). This superconductor’s transition temperature is twice as high than other similar ones. The actual operating temperature for the device is 20 to 30K. Liquid neon, liquid hydrogen, and a closed cycle freeze can all achieve this temperature. These are cheaper and simpler than liquid helium used in the cooling of niobium-alloys (4K). magnesium boride can be doped with other impurities or carbon to maintain superconductivity under magnetic fields or currents. It is also as efficient as niobium at maintaining it.

Magnesium diboride can be described as an ionic substance with hexagonal crystal structures. Magnesium dioxide at an absolute temperature 40K will transform into a superconductor. The actual operating temperature of the superconductor is around 20 to 30K. For this temperature we use liquid neon or liquid hydrogen. Closed-cycle refrigeration can also be used. These cooling methods, which are simpler and more economical than the current industry that uses liquid helium (4K) to cool its niobium-alloy alloy (4K), are much cheaper. It is possible to keep the superconducting intact if the alloy has been doped in carbon or with other impurities.

MgB2 can be prepared by reacting magnesium powder and mixed boron powder.

MgB2 was made from 99.9% magnesium powder and 99% amorphousboron powder, at a 1:1 ratio. It was then pressed into small balls by heating in high pressure nitrogen.

The current method involves mixing amorphous elements boron and magnesium according to the stoichiometric (or adding excessive magnesium) ratio. Next, they are placed in sealed containers (such as tantalum) for vacuum pumping. Finally, they are then put into quartz tubes for vacuum pumping. They then get sintered at 700950 for approximately 14 hour to make MgB2.
