Sometimes, integrated circuit manufacturers use Tantalum Nitride to make a diffusion barrier (or “glue”) layer between copper and the other conductive materials. BEOL treatment, which is approximately 20nm long, involves copper being covered in tantalum first and TaN then coated with physical vapor deposition. Before machining (grinding/polishing), the barrier-coated copper is coated with more copper through PVD and then filled with electrolytic-coated copper.

Tantalum Nitride is also ideal for thin film resistors. It has the advantage of producing a moisture-resistant oxide film, as opposed to nickel-chromium resistors.

The materials used in the creation of sheet resistors are highly resistant to water vapour.

Tantalum pentachloride can also be used to add to hard materials. It can also be used in spraying or increasing the stability of transistors, integrated circuits, and diodes.
