Utilizing metal tungsten or carbon as raw material, tungsten powder of an average particle size between 3 and 5 mm is mixed dry with a ballmill, then press-molded and put into a graphite resist furnace. Or, you can heat it to 14001700 using an induction furnace. Preferably 15501650. W2C is produced in the hydrogen stream and reacts at high temperatures to create WC. First, tungsten Hexacarbonyl can be thermally broken down at between 650 to 1000 degC in CO, and then reacts with carbon monoxide to create WC. W2C is possible at higher temperatures than these.

Hydrogenated tungsten trioxide (WO3) is then reduced to make tungsten dust. The average particle size for tungsten is 35mm. Next, press-form the mixture of tungsten and carbon black under pressure of approximately 1 t/cm2. You will need to heat the block of pressurized material in a graphite pot or crucible at about 1t/cm2. Since W2C can be generated from the beginning of the process, the reaction begins around the tungsten particle. Because the reaction temperature is very low, the unreacted and intermediate W2C will remain. The reaction must then be heated to the high temperatures mentioned above. The raw tungsten particle size should determine the maximum temperature. A reaction can be initiated at temperatures between 1550-1650degC for large particles that have an average size of 150 mm.
