When thulium oxide is present, it will be a colourless powder or light brown to yellow. The micro-hygroscopicity makes it easy to absorb water, carbon dioxide, and other substances from the air into basic, ytterbium, carbonate. It’s the weakest of all the alkalinities in the ytrium-group, other than lutetiumoxid.

Ytterbiumoxide is a white amorphous material with very little hygroscopicity. The melting point is 2346 and the relative density is 9.17. Ytterbiumoxide is insoluble with water and cold acid, but soluble when heated dilute acids are used. There are two oxidation state of ytterbium: trivalent or divalent. Ytterbium at room temperatures can slowly be oxidized with air or water. A colorless powder called ytterbium dioxide, it can also be dispersed in acid to make colorless salts like ytterbium sodium nitrate and ytterbium Sulfate. Also colorless, paramagnetic trivalent ytterbiumions have sharp absorption bands within the near infrared spectrum. This can be used for quantitative analysis of ytterbium. You can reduce the ytterbium-chloride (YbCl3) with hydrogen. An aqueous solution can make the bivalent trivalent ytterbium Ion unstable.

1. A mixture of rare earth and yttrium-niobium ore is formed by the extraction process. The mix contains approximately 350% Y2Oand around 4% CeO2. After the cerium has been removed, the raw materials are fed with the rare-earth nitrate solution. Finally the N263 LiO3 process extracts the ytrium rich rare earth. The organic phase of lutetium (thulium), ytterbium (lutetium) was separated by N263 solvent extraction. Thulium and the aqueous phases were then separated by oxalic acids precipitation, filtering, and calcination to create ytterbiumoxide.

2. Yb3+ was extracted from rare-earth ions via solvent extraction, ion swap or reduction. Yb3+ enrichment was used as a raw material. After that, the ytterbium was precipitated as hydroxide or carbonate with the appropriate precipitant. The ytterbiumoxide is made by heating the hydroxide carbonate or oxalate.
