What is silicon nitride used for?

While silicon nitride has been discovered since the mid-19th century, due to its covalent connection it is difficult to create. Silicon nitride Ceramic is a high quality engineering ceramic. It has excellent mechanical properties, such as strength, toughness, fracture resistance, hardness, wear resistant, chemical and thermal stability, and wear resistance. Silicon nitride (also known as polycrystalline composite) is made of single crystals of silicon and is embedded in the amorphous/partially crystalline glass phase matrix. Its properties vary not only from the inherent properties silicon dioxide single crystals have, but also depending on the size of and morphology the silicon oxide grains and on the volume fraction of the crystals at the silicon nutride grain boundaries. Si3N4’s mechanical, thermal and physical properties are excellent and it can be used in both innovative and traditional ways. Si3N4’s lightweight, good wear resistance, and excellent bending strengths make it a viable alternative to stainless steel, titanium carbide, or other oxide-based materials.
Automobile industry.
A major use of sintered Silicon Nitride is for automotive engine parts. They include precombustion rooms for less emission, faster startup and lower noise. There is also a turbocharger to lower engine lag. The spark ignition engine uses silicon nitride to reduce the wear of rocker pads. Turbocharger turbines are used to lower inertia.
Bearing.
It is not an all ceramic bearing but also a ceramic-hybrid bearing. In this case, the ball is made out of ceramic while the seat ring is made from steel. It is more resilient than ceramics that are made from other materials. For high performance bearings, ball bearings made out of silicon nitride pottery are ideal. NASA’s spacecraft uses silicon nutride bearings as its main engine. Contact with bearing tracks can be reduced as silicon nitride-ball bearings is harder than traditional metal. This has the potential to reduce friction by at least 80%, prolong service life by 3-10x, increase speed up to 80%, reduce weight and reduce vibrations by 60%. It is 79% lighter to carry a silicon nitride ball than a standard tungsten-carbide ball. Silicon nitride ball bearings may be used in high-end automobile bearings. Silicon nitride bearings prove to be particularly helpful in environments where metals may not be allowed due to the possibility of corrosion.
Materials with high temperatures.
The use of silicon-nitride in high-temperature applications has been a long tradition. This ceramic material is one of few that can withstand extreme thermal shocks and thermal gradients effected by rocket engines containing hydrogen/oxygen. NASA scientists applied advanced rapid prototyping technologies to build one-inch wide combustion chamber/nozzle (thruster), assemblies. The five-minute hot test of the thruster using hydrogen / oxygen propellant was followed by a 5 minute cycle to 1320°C.
Medical profession.
Silicon nitride can be used for orthopedic purposes. It is also an alternative to PEEK, which is a polyether ether ketoone, and titanium used in spinal fusion. The hydrophilic, micro-textured silicon nitride surfaces help improve strength, durability, as well as reliability. Some of these materials may be antibacterial, antifungal, or even antiviral.
Use metalworking and cutting tools.
This material can be used in the manufacture of cutting tools as it is hard, heat-resistant, and wear resistant. High-speed casting iron machine machining is possible with the help of this nitride. Sintered silicone nitride is 25-times faster than normal materials (tungsten carbide) in terms of surface speed, thermal toughness, and fracture toughness. It has an enormous impact on manufacturing productivity. When compared to traditional tungsten nitride tools, face milling grey cast iron with silicon-nitride blades doubles the cutting speed, improves tool life, and cuts 50% off the blade’s cost.
Electronic industry.
Silicon nitride serves two purposes: as an electrically isolated material and as a chemical barrier for integrated circuit manufacture. It’s better than silicon dioxide as a microchip passivation layer because of its better diffusion barrier to sodium ions and water molecules. These are two of the most common sources of corrosion or instability in microelectronics. It also serves as the dielectric between layers of polysilicon in analog chip caps.
